Green Corporate Volunteering

News / Green Corporate Volunteering

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Respect Energy employees, together with UNEP/GRID-Warsaw, took part in a volunteering initiative for the City of Warsaw and the Warsaw City Greenery Board.

Purpose of the Action

The main goal  was to clean up the Vistula River beach between the Świętokrzyski Bridge and the Poniatowski Bridge. Warsaw’s riverside areas, popular for relaxation and recreation, are increasingly littered by individuals leaving behind various types of waste.

It was not only a valuable environmental initiative and a great satisfaction from the effort that resulted in the cleanup of trash, but also an excellent opportunity  for team-building and demonstrating that the impetus to change the world starts with ourselves. Cleaning up the world is an idea that brings people together, fosters employee integration, and has a real impact on our surroundings.

Why such initiatives are important

Cleaning up forests and other natural areas is extremely important for multiple reasons—both environmental and social.

Protection of wildlife

Waste left in forests poses a serious threat to animals, which can ingest it and get poisoned, become entangled in plastic packaging, or injured by sharp edges of discarded objects.

Preservation of natural beauty

Litter degrades landscapes, discouraging residents and tourists from enjoying nature. A clean environment promotes relaxation, recreation, and overall well-being.

Prevention of long-term pollution

Plastic and other non-organic waste can take hundreds of years to decompose, releasing harmful substances into soil and groundwater, leading to prolonged ecosystem contamination.

Promotion of eco-friendly attitudes

Participating in clean-up initiatives raises ecological awareness, teaches responsibility, and fosters care for the shared natural environment.

Summary

Cleaning Warsaw’s riverside areas along the Vistula was an important step in raising environmental awareness among employees and highlighting the need to care for the environment. The initiative demonstrated that by acting together, we can achieve a lot, and that taking care of our surroundings is a shared responsibility.
