Grades 7

Why is it worth saving energy and how can we do it best?

Students will learn that energy is a commodity just like the food products they buy every day, and that its price depends on many factors – from production costs, through transmission and distribution, to taxes and additional fees. They will understand why saving energy is important not only for their own wallets, but also for the economy and the environment. They will learn what opportunity cost and negawatts are – i.e., energy that has not been used. Students will also learn about the impact of energy saving on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the climate, and will analyze examples of simple actions in everyday life that can reduce electricity consumption, such as turning off lights, using the kettle sensibly, and setting the refrigerator correctly. During the exercises, they will understand how to calculate the energy consumption of various devices and how to create practical energy saving plans at home, at school, and on a larger scale. This will allow them to develop not only their knowledge of energy, but also the practical skills needed for conscious and responsible energy use.

After the lesson, students should know the answers to the following questions:

1

What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh) and how is the energy consumption of electrical appliances calculated?

2

Why is electricity a commodity similar to food products such as bread rolls or chocolate bars?

3

What determines the price of electricity? What elements make up an electricity bill?

4

What does the term “opportunity cost” mean in the context of energy consumption?

5

What is a negawatt and why is saved energy the cheapest energy?

6

What are the main economic, environmental, and social benefits of saving energy?

7

Why is saving energy in Poland particularly important for the climate?

8

How much CO₂ does the Polish energy sector emit on average when producing 1 kWh of energy, and how does saving energy reduce emissions?

9

What simple actions at home can help reduce electricity consumption? Give at least three examples.

10

How can you calculate the energy consumption of an electrical appliance?

Do you need a certificate?
